Bats: Human Harvest is a sequel to 1999’s Bats starring Lou Diamond Philips. I have never had the pleasure of viewing the original film but fortunately they have no connection and it is not required viewing prior to seeing Bats: Human Harvest.
Our story begins in Afghanistan. A US team of elite military officers have just finished their mission, led by Russo (David Chokachi) who looks strikingly similar to a young Michael Beign, and acts like him as well. They are notified of a new mission to capture a dangerous terrorist in Chechnya, located in western Russia.
Once there, they begin to find mutilated corpses strewn about the countryside. Before long they find out what is responsible for the slayings, large swarms of carnivorous bats. Now the crack military squad must fight their way out of the bat infested forests of Chechnya, and also attempt to complete their mission of finding the terrorist. They eventually catch up with the evil Doctor, but he has a few tricks up his sleeve.
That is really all I can say about it plot wise without giving the entire film away. As simple as this may sound, it works very well. I had a great time watching this and although it isn’t exactly Oscar material, it isn’t trying to be. What it is trying to be is a fun way to kill an hour and a half, and at that it succeeds greatly. The bats are mostly created with CGI, which was done well, but occasionally practical effects are used. The gore effects were quite good as well.
On top of it all, it is very well shot and presented in crisp 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen with 5.1 Dolby Digital audio. Extras include deleted scenes. I would definitely give this one a rent or try and catch it if it airs again on TV. My only real complaint about the film is an overuse of CGI helicopters, but after a while even that becomes amusing.
