The Creepy Kentuckian interviewed the star of one of his favorite childhood horror flicks. This interview was conducted a couple of months ago originally for another publication but it was never used...So here it is for all of the DEADPIT fans!
The Return of Sean Crenshaw!
(Q): First off André thanks for doing the interview I really appreciate it, How did you get the role of 'Sean' in 'The Monster Squad' ? I assume there was an audition right?
(A): Yes, there was the typical audition process. Actually, I had originally read for the role of Rudy. If you know of any of my prior roles to MS, you'd remember that I was usually the cool kid with great hair and cool clothes. After numerous auditions, screen tests and meetings, I learned I had gotten the movie...however, it wasn't for the role of Rudy, it was instead the lead - Sean. I was actually disappointed at first, but things worked out pretty well.
(Q): Do you remember How long of a shoot Monster Squad was?
(A): I was on set for approximately 3 1/2 months shooting. Then in the studio doing looping (dialogue dubbing and redos) for a few days. The entire movie, I think, took about six-seven months all in.
(Q): Just curious if you know if 'The Monster Squad' was originally supposed to be a franchise of multiple films? The way it ended made me think there could be more with new monsters to battle.

(A): Well, we would have loved that! I do think that we had something to build on. But, with what some would call a cool reception at the box office I'm sure studio execs at the time wouldn't see that. There was some sort of disagreement between the studio and the producers or the distributors or something that at the crucial time couldn't agree on marketing, so they suffered with the opening. Luckily, Ryan Lambert (Rudy) and I had a decent fan base to start things off, so coverage in magazines and guest appearances helped out. The film stayed in theaters a few weeks, but really became a favorite of many viewers so it got good steam when it came out on video and cable.
(Q): Have you kept in contact with any of the cast over the years? I've noticed that a few have relatively disappeared.
(A): Not too well I admit. As you know, Brent Chalem (Fat kid) died a while back, Robby Kiger (Patrick) was a friend of mine for years but I haven't seen him for years. Ryan, I believe, is married and lives in Texas. I actually just got off the phone with Ashley Bank (Phoebe) who is currently in New York where she has been going to school and working at CBS productions doing documentary films. She is heading back out to L.A. soon though. She is all grown up and beautiful.
(Q): Does anyone still approach you and remember you from this film or any others?
(A): Even though it has been years, people still approach me and say hi, or ask questions. Usually, they tell me MS was..is...their all-time favorite film and watch constantly even today. During college, I had a few fans that became friends. It really has a unique fan base that will continue to be loyal forever. I think that is really great. They are the ones who will enjoy when it finally comes out on DVD. I get a kick out of times, as do my friends, when a waiter or cute girl at the bar will mention being a fan or even recite their favorite lines. Who knew "Kick him in the nards!" would have so much staying power!
(Q): Are there any funny stories from the set of 'The Monster Squad' that you'd like to share?
(A): One great memory was being invited by Fred Dekker (director) and Shane Black (writer) to join them on the night the movie opened to the public. We had been to numerous premieres and screenings in L.A. and New York, but opening night Fred and Shane (and the rest of their roommates, all young, aspiring writers and directors) hired a limo and we drove around town to different major theaters in L.A. to see the marquee and see how many people were lining up. It was rather cool. Of course, as we all know, this was Shane's first thing ever produced, he has since become one the biggest and highest paid screenwriters in history.
(Q): Were you a fan of horror/monster movies growing up? If so what are some of your favorites?
(A):I did. I remember really liking the original Creature from the Black Lagoon. I just liked the way he looked, totally original.
(Q): Are you still involved in acting at the present time? If not what are you up to?
(A): I do still have a finger some things. I still act when the chance arises and I would love to do as much as possible. So, if anybody out there has a script they are shooting, let me know! I have been involved with many different things over the last years. Maybe in the next interview, we'll do an in-depth "catch-up" update thing and let everybody know what has been going on.
I currently am involved with one of my best friends companies - Premiere Sports Travel. We put together all-inclusive sporting event packages and take people to things like, the Final Four, the Super bowl games, Kentucky Derby, NASCAR and The Masters. If anybody wants to join us see us at WWW.SPORTSTRAVEL.COM
(Q): Thanks so much for doing the interview!
(A): Thank you for hangin in there and being supportive. It was a great experience and led to many great things later. Hopefully, soon, there will be a major release with the DVD. Perhaps we can work together to promote the interest and get the studio moving forward.
