For anyone who remembers 'The Monster Squad' you can't forget little Phoebe Crenshaw who was portrayed by the VERY young Ashley Bank. CK had the opportunity to interview her through email a few months ago, hopefully everyone will enjoy this!
Bank on Phoebe: Catching Up With Ashley Bank!
(Q): Do you remember how you got the role of Phoebe in 'The Monster Squad'? Was there an audition for it?
(A): I remember going to a few different auditions for The Monster Squad. The only one I really remember though was the screen test. We went onto the back-lot and into a studio where I think I read with some of the other actors. I was so young at the time that most auditions didn’t seem like auditions. They just seemed like a different kind of play time.
(Q): This movie still has quite the cult following, Does/Did anybody ever recognize you from the film?
(A): Every once in a while someone will come up to me and tell me I look familiar, but they usually can’t place where from. We go through the usual song and dance, and if they’re Monster Squad fans, I usually get quite a reaction. I look exactly the same so people are usually like, “Oh my god, of course! You look just like her!” When I was younger I used to get recognized more often.
(Q): Being that you were of such young age during filming, was it difficult for you to be around all of these horrendous Monsters? And to have a close on-screen amity with the Frankenstein character?

(A): I have to say that most of the monsters were really friendly and went out of their way to make sure the kids weren’t scared. They would come and talk to me without their costumes or with their costume half off so that I would know they were people dressed up. Frankenstein was never really that scary because we had such a gentle interaction. The one I was really scared of was Dracula. Whenever I had to interact with him, the director would have him take out his fangs and red contacts so I wouldn’t freak out. But there was one time when I was caught totally off guard. We were about to do the scene where Dracula lifts me up by the chin and Fred came up to me and said “I want you to scream in this scene.” I asked him when I was supposed to scream, and he said, “You’ll know when.” So I got on the lift, and Dracula put his hand around my chin, and right after Fred yelled action, Duncan opened his eyes (with red contacts in place) and opened his mouth (fangs in place) and hissed at me. Needless to say, that scene was filmed in one take.
(Q): What are your thoughts on 'The Monster Squad' today? Did you think that 18 years after the fact, you'd be getting interviewed about it?
(A): If you’d told me I would be interviewed 18 years later for The Monster Squad, I don’t think I would have believed you. In my opinion the mixed demographic of the film made it incredibly difficult to market and it didn’t make very much money or stay in the theaters for that long. I had always looked at it as one of the most fun experiences in my life and left it at that. I’m glad that people still respond to it and it’s actually really thrilling to be asked about it. As a filmmaker, you hope that the work you do touches someone or inspires them in some way. To know that you have moved people is one of the greatest gifts I’ve ever received.
(Q): By looking at your IMDB profile, it seems that you've gotten out of acting. What are you up to these days?
(A): I stopped acting when I was about 14, to be “normal”. I went to school dances, became a cheerleader, loitered after school, etc. I went to college at NYU and got bit by the producing bug. I’ve produced 3 short films, one of which, The Reunion, had won some great festival awards. I’m also currently in pre-production on an independent feature that will hopefully shoot this summer and I’ve also just gotten back into acting, so hopefully you’ll see me around in the near future!
(Q): In closing I'd like to thank you for being a part of this Monster Squad feature, Is there anything you'd want to say to other fans out there?
(A): I just want to express my gratitude for what you guys do and tell you how honored I am to have been interviewed. I want to thank each and every fan because you are what make the work important. Thanks!
